First elected to Congress in 1996, Pete Sessions believes that government can be both efficient and effective at providing solutions to our problems. Noting that character does matter, Pete believes that no elected official is above the law and must be accountable for his actions. As a member of the majority party, Pete Sessions is a young, conservative leader and a player on the winning team whose goal is to advance a pro-business agenda, provide quality education to all Americans, lower taxes, reduce teen drug use, and guarantee the retirement security of every generation of Americans. A native Texan, Pete is an energetic, hardworking, and straightforward individual who believes there is a solution to every problem in America. Congressman Sessions focuses on those reforms that will lead to a better life for all Americans. Congressman Sessions has proudly served for 9 years on the powerful House Rules Committee. Most known for its role as legislative gatekeeper, assisting in the scheduling of legislation for floor consideration, the Rules Committee also has important oversight responsibilities. These responsibilities include oversight of the rules of the House, the House’s internal organization, the Congressional budget process, the ethics process, and relations between Congress and the Executive and Judicial Branches. Congressman Sessions’ past committee assignments have focused his legislative interests on specific items. With the broad reach of the Rules Committee, he will is able to influence every piece of legislation before it reaches the House floor. Because of intense legislative responsibility in accepting a position on the House Rules Committee, the rules of the House require Congressman Sessions to relinquish his membership on the Banking and Financial Services, Government Reform and Oversight, and Science committees. As the only North Texan on the House Banking Committee, however, Congressman Sessions has taken a leave of absence and retains his position of seniority on the Banking Committee. Congressman Sessions will maintain his strong relationship with the banking community as well as his intimate involvement in banking issues and reform. Pete Sessions was born on March 22, 1955 and grew up in Waco. After graduating from Southwestern University in 1978, he joined Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where he worked for the next 16 years without missing a day of work. Pete served as District Manager for Marketing in Dallas. Pete’s corporate and private sector experience gives him expert insight in understanding government and fighting bureaucracy. In 1993, Pete retired from the private sector to run for Congress against John Bryant (D-TX). In 1994-1995, he served as Vice President, Public Policy at the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA), a Dallas-based conservative public policy research institute. Each week, Congressman Pete Sessions spends time working in Texas. He travels throughout his Congressional District visiting schools, meeting with community leaders and touring local businesses. Congressman Sessions resides in Dallas with his wife, Nete, and two sons, Bill (age 17) and Alex (age 13). Pete Sessions is an Eagle Scout and former Scout Master and was recently honored as a recipient of the National Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. He is proud to have been a Scout Master for 13 Eagle Scouts. He is also a member of the United Methodist Church. Pete continues to be active in Dallas where he is an Rotarian and a current Board Member of the East Dallas YMCA. He has served as Chairman of the Northeast Dallas Chamber of Commerce and former District Chairman of the White Rock Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
