April, 2007 The legislation is called “The Employee Free Choice Act.” Its title proves how Washington twists the language for political purposes. In this case, the bill actually takes away workers’ rights to decide whether or not to join a union. The bill is more widely known as “Card Check.” Its most dangerous “reform” does away with private-ballot elections for all workers to have a direct say on whether or not to join a labor union. In place of a secret-ballot, the bill requires a business to recognize a labor union once a majority of its employees simply sign their names on individual cards expressing support for a union. “Card Check” silences all workers who are opposed to joining a labor union. And the fact is: Many workers do not want to join a labor union. In the 1950s, labor unions represented about 35 percent of workers in the private sector. Today, that number is just 7.4 percent. Will you help stop “Card Check?” Make a donation to Pete’s campaign to help launch a public awareness campaign to alert voters of the dangers of this legislation.
